Abstract

Specifies classification, design, interchangeability of dimensions with tolerances, finish, marking requirements for 70 mm and 110 mm towballs, which are used for the towing of trailers above 3.5 t in tension and compression. A dynamic test is given in an appendix.

Scope

This Standard specifies requirements for heavy duty couplings, that are suitable for vehicles towing medium and heavy trailers on sealed and unsealed roads, and covers two sizes of towballs -
(a) 70 mm for up to 10 t ATM single trailer only; and
(b) 110 mm for trailers intended for use above 10 t ATM.

NOTES:
1 Coupling bodies are specified in AS 3819.2.
2 For the 70 mm diameter towball, the design and construction are specified for shank-type and unshanked-type towballs.
