Full Description

Scope

This project will develop standards for the interface functionality among propulsion, friction brake and train-borne master constrol. The standards will encompass performance parameters, communication methods and the means for measurement and verification of performance. Third party systems performing functions traditionally carried out in one of the above systems will also be covered.

Purpose

There presently are numerous functional protocols for interfaces among train-borne master control, propulsion, friction brake, spin-slide control, etc. This has led to a lack of standardization, compatibility and interchangeability with attendant higher first cost and recurrent integration problems. Standards used by car-builders and system suppliers are expected to lower costs, reduce vehicle introduction problems, improve reliability and facilitate upgrades. Standards will ensure prioritization of safety functionality as well. Cost savings/year could approach 15MM when implemented.

Abstract

New IEEE Standard - Inactive - Superseded. The interfaces between and among functional systems on rail rapid transit vehicles is prescribed. The systems themselves are treated as "black boxes;" requirements for the input signals and the output response are given. For each category of interface, three types are listed in in-creasing technical sophistication.
