Scope

This guide documents proven methods and designs to reduce bird-related outages, such as contamination outages, streamer outages, and electrocution/collision/contact outages on transmission lines, in substations, and on distribution lines, thereby improving reliability and minimizing the associated revenue loss.

Purpose

Recommended procedures and techniques for reducing bird related contamination, streamer, electrocution and collision (contact) outages on transmission lines, in substations and on overhead distribution lines, including all apparatuses and devices, such as insulators, transformers, surge arresters, capacitor banks, poles etc. are provided. The information in this guide was drawn from electric utilities, suppliers, universities, related industries, and personal observations. Included in this guide are methods for reducingvarious bird-related outages that have been shown to be effective. The information presented is of particular benefit to utilities that are experiencing various bird related outages, some not even aware of theproblem. It is also of value to those utilities that are in the process of erecting new lines in areas where birds are prevalent.

Abstract

New IEEE Standard - Active. Methods, techniques, and designs to mitigate bird-related power interruptions and equipment damage resulting from avian interactions with electric facilities are covered in this document. This document addresses electrocutions, collisions, nesting problems, and outages caused by fecal contamination and fecal streamers. The topics include bird impacts to transmission lines, distribution lines, and substations. Woodpecker issues are also addressed. It is believed that resolving these issues will improve system reliability and minimize revenue losses.
