The scope of this guide is to describe field test methods that verify the functionality of the current transformer (CT) and the associated circuit in order to assure that the circuit will transmit accurate current for proper function of protective relaying. This guide covers precautions, types of tests, acceptable methods of performing such tests, and typical results of the tests. The testing methods described in this guide are intended for field testing during either commissioning or after a period of service. Included in the guide are test methods and procedures using test equipment commercially available. Also included is information on optical and other current sensor systems.
Purpose
The purpose of the guide is to provide information on the current technology for field testing of instrument transformers and to more closely coordinate the information with the other industry standards, for example, National Electrical Safety Code(R) (NESC(R)).
Abstract
Revision Standard - Active. This guide describes field test methods that assure that current transformers are connected properly, are of marked ratio and polarity, and are in a condition to perform as designed both initially and after having been in service for a period of time.
